Almost a year ago, Headlines revealed that Crypto.Com accidentally sent $10.5M to a Woman instead of $100

Crypto.com made a colossal blunder, transferring $10.5 million worth of cryptocurrency to a woman in Melbourne, Australia, instead of a refund of $100. Imagine getting a notification about such an astronomical sum landing unexpectedly in your wallet!

The woman who received this accidental windfall faced an ethical dilemma that many of us might find intriguing, but the reports showed that she spent a significant portion of the funds. A twist of fate turned her into a millionairess overnight.

It happened in May 2021, Crypto.com made an unfortunate error when they entered an incorrect account number into the payment amount field. They failed to spot the erroneous payment until a company audit was carried out in late December — seven months later!

Following the incident, Crypto.com took legal action against the woman and her sister, who had received a portion of the mistaken $10.5 million payment.

In February, the company obtained freezing orders against her bank account. However, it was later revealed that she had transferred most of the funds to different accounts.

​

Towards the end of January, she transferred $430,000 to her daughter, as mentioned in the judgment. Following that, about a month later, she used the funds mistakenly sent to her to buy a $1.35 million house in Craigieburn and transferred its ownership to her sister.

In March, Crypto.com attempted to freeze the sister's bank accounts; however, these efforts were unsuccessful.

Finally, the default judgment mandated the sister to compensate Crypto.com with $1.35 million, sell the property, and cover interest amounting to $27,369.64 and associated costs.
