I fail to see how it is conceivable that a simple, low cost & effective alternative to PoW is possible considering the enormous amount of brilliant mental energy expended on this issue to date. Nevertheless, after more than 16 years in this field (almost 3 years before the bitcoin white paper), a provocative solution has occurred to me as detailed here. So I am begging for input as to how the preceding proposal is inevitably lacking. Should you find my style offensive then please forgive my ego and be free to grok the idea.
