First time I bought bitcoin in 2011 3BTC and a dark web scam…

So yeah when I first tried to get into buying bitcoin in 2011 it really was the Wild West…

Would have to make an anonymous contact with a BTC “seller” who were always shady AF…

Would make contact say how many BTC you wanted (yes how many… at this point you didn’t buy fractions of a coin you bought whole coins lol)… seller would tell you a price then you had a two hour window to go to a particular bank of their choosing and do a direct ATM deposit…

Take a picture of the deposit slip and send it to them then wait a few hours for them to transfer you the bitcoin…

Was weird and shady and well just so weird…

But my first time I did it… I knew you needed a wallet for the coin but there was next to no information available anywhere online to guide a new comer into the process.

In hindsight my next move was really dumb but I thought I was smart. I found a site on the dark web that let you open a BTC wallet. I opened an account got my Wallet deposit ID and deposited 3 bitcoin (at the time worth just under $100AUD each) into the wallet.

Got confirmation from seller that coin was deposited some time later. When I went to get the coin after the deposit I was simply not able to access the wallet… the site was there, I took a photo of all my ID details everything was correct the site/wallet just acted like I wasn’t even putting details in…

It was clearly a scam, I could access the wallet until I made my first deposit then I became locked out…

So yeah I got scammed out of 3BTC on my first ever purchase… actually really put me off, didn’t get back into bitcoin until the following year!!!

No idea how much those dark web wallet scammers made of that lil scam…

Admittedly I only lost less than $300AUD and if I hadn’t lost it I would have spent it on Silk Road so not like I lost out on a massive amount of cash but still lol
