How does lightning work fees-wise?

Hi all,

Basically what it says in the title. I get how LN functions in terms of sending payments through channels. What I don't get is how the fees are kept low enough to make using LN viable.

Eg say I want to transact with 10 different people using LN, don't I have to open 10 new channels, and won't every channel cost a fee to open? On the face of it that seems to make it really hard to use LN for peer to peer cashlike payments. What am I missing that makes LN economically viable for small cash-like transactions?
