This initiative is targeted at Bitcoin but not limited to Bitcoin's proof-of-work. The broad attack on crypto underlines the actual intentions of targeting cryptocurrency due to its censorship resistance. Environmental concerns are just the attack vector of choice.
Bitcoin consumes less energy than any traditional alternatives (or most developed industries). It is however undoubtedly much easier to calculate how much Bitcoin consumes compared to how resource intensive it is to run a central bank and banking sector – or the internet, with its hardware and other resources required. I suppose we are not going to start discussing shutting down YouTube or other “useless” sites due to environmental concerns. Or maybe in the future we are.
