I've worked in the gaming industry for 10 years, here's some ideas on what I think Blockchain could help facilitate.

All Cryptocurrencies

My career has mostly been working on or with infrastructure, hyperscalers, GaaS, B2B/AAA gaming companies, cloud & edge compute and a hell of a lot more. Though I've experienced a lot, I have seen some problems that could be solved by people far smarter than me. I also believe that Blockchain technology can be a fundamental building block for some of these ideas.

Idea: Open source inventory and cosmetics management across games. You are in WoW, a really nice knife transmog drops. It goes into your inventory and also your shared account data. Fast forward 2 hours and you load up CoD. You go to the equipment menu and you now have the option to equip it cosmetically. Issues: Not all transmogs are made equally. Different games will have different attack animations, weapon scale and animations. Final thoughts: Make this an easy to integrate SDK and I know a bunch of studios that would love you forever.

Idea: Secure account resale / management Your steam account is worth 10s of thousands of dollars, you have 14 max level characters on World of Warcraft and you gave up maxing your runescape account after three 99s. How much is it worth for unused accounts? What happens if I'm hacked / want to recover my account using personal details? What happens to these accounts when I die? Issues: Some people want anonymous, some people want regulated. Escrow service and account verification. Final thoughts: If I could have got 10k for my RuneScape account 10 years ago when people didn't just bot that would have been super chill. My account now is worth like 200.

Idea: Shared assets / Community run marketplace for asset creation. Etsy but for assets and digital work, except my game engine can just hook up to the asset store and directly import those models into my game. Money goes to the artists and more engines can integrate allowing much needed diversification. Issues: Does this really need Blockchain? Could it help allow more games to be created that saturate the market further, allowing for additional domination from the big studios? Final thoughts: I want to see creators get paid more fairly. Unity and Unreal take such massive cuts and it's genuinely quite shitty.

I hope these ideas can be used as a seed to build great things. I am happy to discuss and give my thoughts on anything related to the gaming industry and what Blockchain potentially means for the future.

Please don't ask me about the metaverse, it's a glorified marketing term for a bunch of technology that has existed for some time.
