Lifestyle cash out and life lessons

This will make the hodlers roll their eyes but I just wanted to share that I cashed out some BTC to take the fam to Disneyland. Not a crazy amount but even I am shocked that I so quickly made this move, considering I could’ve done this at the peak.

I was reminded by the death of my mentor — a very intelligent human wise beyond his years who got me into BTC in the early 2010s. He said his goal was to achieve 100 million dollars through BTC investments. And that he did about 7 years later. He had that much faith in BTC, just from studying a bunch of white papers. I hopped on board, being the mentee with a bucket list dream of what I wanted to acquire and achieve through amassing wealth via BTC.

He was always about hodling but always reminded me, “always know your exit strategy”. At the time, i didn’t. I just observed him and held on tight. In 2016, he cashed out enough BTC to purchase a waterfront mansion.

I remember causally taunting him saying, I thought you said never sell! And he said, I had to make a lifestyle choice.

That answer stayed with me forever.

Summer of 2017, his assistant found him dead on the floor of his own ocean-view bedroom. A brain aneurysm was the culprit.

The wake was surprisingly not depressing. Maybe about 50-60 showed up. We ate king crablegs and steak after watching a small group take a boat out to scatter his ashes. He loved stocking up on king crab and steak. His estranged siblings were there. Nothing was left to them in his will.

I remember feeling sad that there were no more occasions to eat this expensive food together. And it would be the last time we’d set foot in that mansion. And the very last time I’d appreciate a million dollar view like that from the comfort of my second home.

I’m still trying to glean the lessons from his death and what he taught me about BTC. It is perhaps why I’ve been so emotionally tied to my BTC. I had many opportunities to make some serious lifestyle improvements at the peaks, but I held on.

And now, at a very mediocre price, I’ve started letting some of it go in the name of living. Because you just never know and life truly is too short to keep waiting.
