I will keep it brief. A merchant added additional charges (that amex took care of, while wells fargo was more concerned with informing me of the fact that it wasn't technically fraud than actually fixing it. Despite agreeing it was a scam they still insisted on disputing it as a duplicate transaction for some fucking reason I shit you not.)
All of my cards involved had to be frozen. Several more were frozen by the issuer either in related or unrelated incidents until I had zero active credit cards or debit cards while out of the country.
My debit card got locked trying to get pesos out at a bank even.
I had friends to zelle/cashapp/etc. with me.
However, I always bring roughly $100 usd in bitcoin with me while abroad for emergencies. I would have been able to take this paper wallet and find somebody to transact with digitally, probably for at least $50 usd in pesos, and at most exactly the amount necessary for spot with a little off the top for a tip.
I could even transact with giving them the paper wallet I printed.
At minimum, there were 6 bitcoin atms that allowed me to sell bitcoin in the near vicinity of the large city we were in in mexico, and I could have feasibly sent my bitcoin to myself to instantly sell for cashapp cash as well. (Which would likely not freeze on me when redeeming).
Bitcoin gave me legit options, and nobody in the world is dumb enough to not buy bitcoin for a pretty big discount under spot in an emergency.
You also don't have thieves and robbers actively looking for it, and its much easier to keep safe. Anywhere you'd put your passport you can keep your bitcoin.
