Need help understanding a transaction on the blockchain

Hi everyone. I need help understanding the following type of transaction and why it would be made in the following way:

  • Address X sends 0 ETH to Address Y
  • Inside this contract call, an internal transaction moves 100 ETH from Address Y to Address Z.

Why wouldn't the transaction simply be 100 ETH from Y to Z?

Is there some kind of mechanism (like sending ETH to an exchange for example) that causes this to happen without it being explicitly desired by the owner of Address Y?
