Over on the friendly Bitcoin sub, there's currently an absolutely frantic post about how NY is about to DESTROY CRYPTOCURRENCIES, everyone! It's the TOP POST ON THE BITCOIN SUB!!!!!!111

There's a massive piece of legislation in New York right now that can destroy cryptocurrency

Did you hear? The legislation is MASSIVE and will DESTROY cryptocurrencies! OP is telling everyone to call their legislator, literally running around like a chicken with their head cut off, crying things like:

If this bill passes at 2:30pm then it is 100% going to pass the Assembly and mining in NY will be done for.

and

This is a pressing issue that can end crypto mining in New York (and potentially cause other states and countries to follow suit) in less than 2 hours.

The only problem? Literally none of what OP claims is true.

This "massive" piece of legislation that was apparently too large for OP to comprehend is three pages long, and the proposed modifications (shown in green) are two paragraphs. Literally all it does is address air permits for fossil fuel-fired generation facilities used for on-site (behind-the-meter) crypto mining:

1. For two years, no applications for an electric generating facility that uses a carbon-based fuel will be granted, if it provides (in whole or in part) behind-the-meter energy to a proof of work crypto mining operation
2. For two years, no permits will be renewed for an electric generation facility that uses a carbon-based fuel if it provides (in whole or in part) behind-the-meter energy to a proof of work crypto mining operation.

So OP over there is FREAKING OUT because no new air permits will be granted to fossil fuel plants if they serve on-site crypto mining organizations. Apparently, this will kill cryptocurrencies forever. The amount of comments of people who clearly have no idea that OP is lying to them is astounding.

Remember, folks - we believe what we want to believe. As a human being, you are predisposed to believe and consume news that supports your worldview, and dismiss news that contradicts it. The secret is to try your hardest to fight that predisposition, consume news with an objective mind, and question everything someone tells you.
