Preparing for Q-Day as NIST nears approval of PQC standards - Help Net Security

The post-quantum cryptography conversation continues to heat up. A few months ago, it looked like coins with an emphasis on quantum resistance were gaining ground as Vitalik mentioned his emergency plan, Apple implemented a post-quantum solution for Imessage, and the NIST approved algorithms will finally be "ready for deployment and enterprise use by security-oriented public and private sector early adopters."

Coins like QANX, QRL, CELL, XX, XEP all ran quite a bit stronger than other alts, but mostly fell right back when alts retreated.

Despite this topic often times creating frustrations for people who want to say it will not be an issue for a long time, you can see there will be plenty of press. And since real world companies are investing and upgrading, I believe people will gravitate toward agreeing systems and crypto/blockchain need to adopt the new standards.

If you don't implement a solution, at best, you will be considered vulnerable. At worst, you will suffer attacks. Either way, people will expect the changes.

This is not a quick fix- it requires thoughtful solutions. The algos are understood, retrofitting these into existing ecosystems is the hard part. And trying to find ways to limit impacts to users. It's for that reason I believe legacy coins need to be one of the first to start building. And before they can do that, they need to gain some consensus. And after making a major change, and testing it like crazy to protect all funds, they need to give users time to take the necessary migration steps.

Assuming they start now, and they should, I expect this will draw even more attention to the projects that recognized this problem needed to be solved. The ones listed have thought about this for years. In my opinion, each still has to prove how they will gain adoption.

Being quantum resistant alone does not create adoption. As outlined in the article, every system will need to become quantum resistant. Some will simply fail at this, some won't work well, and some will run great, providing capabilities the world needs.

I believe those will emerge as the next winners. How do you see it playing out?
