In 2021, El Salvador's President (*cough* dictator *cough*) started to buy bags of Bitcoin. He did it in several seemingly random buys that he announced on Twitter.
Starting in September with two batches of 200 coins.
Then about 8 batches at random times between September 2021 and November 2022. Each batch between 20-500 Bitcoin with no rhyme or reason in the amount or timing.
But then on November 17, 2022, he finally decided to DCA properly and simply buy 1 Bitcoin a day.
The numbers:
- The average acquisition cost was about 42.6K per Bitcoin.
- It cost El Salvador about $129.9 M to acquire their 2,862 BTC.
- Today, those 2,862 Bitcoin are worth $203M.
- That's $73M in unrealized gains in 2.5 years.
- That's about 56% in portfolio gains.
- Bitcoin is currently up 458% from its bear market lowest dip in 2022.
- El Salvador bought their Bitcoins unevenly with a bigger concentration in 2021 and early 2022.
- If El Salvador had bough everything at once on their first day, they would be up by a little less, about 50% instead of 56%.
- If they had properly DCA'd equally every month, the average acquisition cost would have been $31,500 instead of $42,600.
- If they had DCA'd equally every month, they would have been up about 79% instead of 56%.
- If Bitcoin were to hit $100K, their portfolio would be worth $286M.
