The truth behind who's vote really counts in governance polls

Whales in this sub hold incredible amounts of moons. The top ten whales holds over 5 million moons. The number one whale has a whopping 799 000 moons alone! Many of our Mods also enjoy the fun with 400 000 moons or more.

Absolutely mind blowing moon counts- but it does pose a sinister question: Against these odds, does our votes even matter?

Well let’s find out together.

What is a whale?

Well we have many categories of whales. Here’s a list that shows you what category you may fall under, and how many moons you need to be a whale (taken from https://ccmoons.com/)

Whale Size # Users Dominance Moon_Count
Leviathan (????) 1 3.7% 1 000 000 +
Kraken (????) 7 11.9% 500 000 - 999 999
Blue Whale (????) 4 4.3% 250 000 - 499 999
Humpback Whale (????) 13 6.2% 100 000 - 249 999
Narwhal () 38 7.0% 50 000 - 99 999
Shark 83 8.1% 25000 - 49 999
Dolphin (????) 280 11.7% 10000-24 999
Swordfish (⚔️????) 480 9.2% 5000 - 9999
Turtle (????) 3536 20.6% 1000 - 4999
Crab (????) 15341 14.0% 100 - 999
Minnow (????) 7438 1.5% 50 - 99
Shrimp 58193 1.7% 0 - 49

Voting Dominance

Moons are governance tokens, the more moons you own the higher your vote counts. Now at first you might think this is unfair, I mean what if mods can outvote what we want.

To see the impact of votes, I will divide the whales into three simple categories

- Largest whales (100k + stinking rich) 26.1%

- Normal Whales (25-99k moons) 15.1%

- Aspiring Whales (5 -25k moons) 20.9%

- The rest of us ( < 5k moons) 37%

The largest of whales (Blue Whales and above) are the wealthiest of r/cryptocurrency and sit with over 100k moons. This is the domain of Mods, OG members, etc. There’s around 25 of them and their combined voting power however is only 26%.

If you remove the largest whale (u/moondistributor) out of the stats, the combined whale power reduces to 22%.

The next group of whales (25-99k moons) only sit with 15% of the power. I am guessing these are your oldest of members that has contributed a lot in the past.

Following them are the Aspiring whales (5-25k moons). These could be our Agricultural experts (ahem moonfarmers) or older members that does not contribute as often. They hold 21% of the voting power

Then that leaves us with the rest of the members that has less than 5k moons. These are those of us than joined in the last year perhaps. Combined we hold 37.8% of the controlling vote!

So interestingly despite the moon dominance of certain whales, votes can be considered free and fair. The large majority of power (58%) sits with users under 25k moons. This should encourage everyone to vote. Also interesting the user’s moon dominance entirely overshadows the whales and mods dominance. Interesting hey?

Let your voice be heard and vote in the polls and flex that moon dominance!

Conclusion

Surprisingly whales do not actually have enough moons to dominate governance polls. Most of the voting power actually lies within us – the average users. So go ahead vote flex your moon power and vote on those governance polls. You get 5% bonus moons to boot!
