There will NEVER be only 21 million BTCs!

We all love the bullish statement "There will only ever be 21 million BTCs!", when we need some hopium. I see it popping up quite often, as a mean to saying "adoption is going to grow, but supply is limited to that magic number".

Well, if you thought you liked it, you are going to like it even more now (in case you didn't know about it, already): the number will NEVER even reach that high. We won't have 21 million BTCs. In fact, BTC will actually be deflationary, with time. Yes, you read that right.

Here are some reasons:

- lost wallets/seed phrases

- people deleting their accounts and password (if they were on an exchange) because they bought at ATH and the "price will never recover" (or so they thought)

- BTCs being sent to the wrong adress/chain and lost forever

- people dying before cashing out/releasing those BTCs to an exchange and no one (of the family members eligible to the inheritance) knew they had a wallet to begin with/don't know what Buttcoin is/don't have a clue where the now deceased kept their wallet/seed phrase

And many more examples, but you get the point.

All of the above is likely to continue in the future, so, even after the last BTC will be mined, the supply will keep decreasing and decreasing over time.

So, remember, when you read the statement "there will only ever be 21 million BTCs around", it's actually way, way better than that.

Now, where would you want your money to be? In fiat, that loses value yearly "thanks" to inflation? Or in something that is "programmed" to go up? As long as there is/will be demand (and more and more of it), and (less and less) supply, the price can only increase.

TLDR: the amount of BTCs will never reach 21 millions, because a lot of them are already lost and gone forever and more of them will suffer the same fate in the coming years.

EDIT: forgot to specify "available". Sure, there will be 21 million total BTCs mined, but a lot of them will not be in the supply pool.
