Trip down memory lane: r/CryptoCurrency threads from 2016 through 2018

Off the back of my positive feedback from the previous trip down memory lane covering threads from 8-10 years ago, I decided I'd make one based on threads from 2016 to 2018. A time when BTC ran from $450 to just under $20k in a little under two years, to then end in 2018 at around $4k. Trying to keep these posts to user submitted ones rather than news articles.

Dear Bitcoiners: Stop Cheering for Economic Collapse

That's a familiar phrase! Seems as though some things never change. This comment seemed to sum up all the other ones:

People are only cheering for the collapse of the corrupt banking institute that has enslaved us all, not the collapse of the economy the corrupt banking institute is causing.

but it seems people were convinced (whether speaking technically or wantingly for their own profitable sake is unsure)

Ethereum

ETH started pricking ears up around this time it seems, along with, of course, unsettled minds on the future for it. Top comment in the thread doubted it:

I still haven't quite understood what ETH actually is about. My bet is that the scope is too big to become widely accepted. I'm not sure though.

Whereas many others were convinced, couple examples include:

It has a kickass dev team and a proper roadmap. Its the real deal.

and

Ethereum is more than a currency, it's a development platform that allows programmers create software that will be guaranteed to execute on a global computer as long as you give it enough gas to run.

which Altcoins do you think are undervalued? (and 2017: Humble predictions for best cryptocurrency to invest in)

Was going to try and avoid these but after reading through it seemed as though the Dogecoin trend was still continuing with a multitude of mentions. Other ones outside the usual BTC, ETH and LTC were: Monero, Gridcoin, Syscoin and Dash. Never heard of these myself, wonder how they compare to the coins shilled these days and are more proof of alts dying in bear markets?

I hate to be this guy but... we are in a huge bubble, hear me out

For context: 2017 rally has just started, and the folk were seeing BTC jump from around $900 at the beginning of the year to around $2100 in 5 months or so. Thread includes some Doomsday-esque chapter:

Things are way, way out of proportion. There will be a very painful waking up... I will sell my assets this week. I am happy with the gains and will endure missing out on possible gains.

Though some remained vigilant:

But look at Bitcoin right now... As long as it bounces back and continues to grow even more then the only ones who lose are those trying to time the market. HODL and chill.

There's a lot more emotional stuff in here (as opposed to "TA") and is a good read so not going to copy pasta here.

I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed. The crypto community is going full r*tard tonight.

Lots more of anticipation/nerves/excitement in here induced by the rumours of a crypto-regulation bill. Worth a good read as I feel like we are somewhat in this stage too and don't want to litter this with quotes.

Bitcoin Price Hits $10,000

This is midway through the incredible 2017 rally, gaining $2.5k in just one month.

M-Maybe I shouldn't have bought dr*gs on S*** Road for 150 bitcoin in 2011...

Bitcoin has reached $20,000!

Huge big green chart of the day going from $18.2k to $20k, lots of upvotes, yet people remained sceptical:

Kind of terrifying to be honest. Feel like we're walking next to a crumbling cliff and I'd just prefer to get it over with than take the pressure of wondering when it'll happen.

and

Unfortunately, I still feel like this is becoming more and more of a speculative bubble. People aren't buying Bitcoin for the technology anymore, they're buying it to make money.

Daily General Discussion - December 22, 2017

Just under a week after hitting 20k, BTC drops to around 15k.

Woo my first major dip... Time to buy

It's a good time to buy your coins at a discounted price

Around this time the daily discussions started to liven up - mainly with peoples emotional responses to the market(s).

Ripple at second place by market cap: surpassed Ethereum!

Bitconnect just exited.

Even if you weren't in the crypto scene, you probably heard about this. Massive amounts of distraught from one of the fattest crypto ponzi schemes to collapse in front of everyone's eyes as the 'founders' fled the scene.

BTC slumping at around $7k, just off the back of a dead cat bounce and people were feeling the pain.

We're writing history. This thread is either going to tell the story of a massive paradigm shift in tech and investing or be a case study in how people react to a historic bubble popping.

Alcohol is a good investment right now.

Just so you know. You can beat the whales if you buy the bottom of the dips and hodl. It will only go down so much.

Justice Bitconnect Leader Arrested

Top comments are a series of mindfucks:

Anyone else still hodling?

Lots of more relatable content to what is going on now, stories of copium, people sharing their portfolio with very NSFW loss porn and lots of people saying they exited at ATH.

What the hell is going on?

The early rumours of Tether and mass panic about it de-pegging to 95 cents.

Texit is happening.

More threads were popping up too with concerns regarding Tether too.

Accumulating & hodling now for the next several years may be your last chance to find any rest in this life.

Bear market had been dire and going on very long. Sadly there isn't a happy end to the 2018 crypto year with a similar intent on how we are currently living:

be greedy when fearful or something

Take it with a pinch of salt because I wasn't there through the 2018 bear market, but things seemed pretty similar to how they are now. Thought it was quite ironic seeing this post too on A brief history of the 2013-2015 crypto bear market, why "99% of alts die" is misleading. WAGMI.
