What are the big use cases for cross chain besides lending or yield farming in other protocols?

I am trying to understand the most common use cases and which cross chain solutions fit which scenarios.

I either head things at a high level that something is a specific chain to chain bridge or Polkadot is cross chain, but I am still unclear.

How does this fit in with say chainlink cross chain interoperability protocol?
