We all know that a major barrier to widespread self-custody in hot/cold wallets is the seed phrases. People seem to have a nasty habit of losing or forgetting them, which means that the assets deposited in their wallets are stuck forever.
To circumvent this problem, Vitalik Buterin recently announced the feature of account abstractions during the Ethereum Community Conference. So, instead of relying on the seed phrases, you can give a part of your recovery key to 3 to 5 people whom you trust the most. In order to use this recovery key, you just need to contact several of them and combine their parts to retrieve the entire recovery key. This is touted to be a superior way than keeping your seed phrases.
What are your thoughts about this though? I thought dividing my seed phrases into three groups and writing them on three different recovery sheets would be good enough to keep the seed phrases safe. If I call upon my contacts to help keep part of my recovery key, wouldnβt they collude with each other to steal my funds when our relationships turn sour? Am I the only one feeling anxious that my control is eroded when I call upon others to save my recovery key?
