6 Dogs and a Frog. But which Memecoin in the Top 100 is worth your attention?

All Cryptocurrencies

by COINS NEWS 97 Views

Looking at the top 100, Crypto veterans might have noticed that a series of Meme-coins are now rubbing shoulders in market cap terms against some of the best legacy Crypto projects.

Are they just memes, or are these coins and tokens leveraging their voracious communities to actually do something in the Crypto space, or is it just shoe-horning utility in as a facade to gain hype?

In no particular order...

Floki

Started out as a meme-coin (I'm going to be saying this a lot) named after Elon's fucking dog of all things, probably in some stupid attempt to get him to retweet it in 2021. As it stands in 2024 there's a DAO making decisions on Floki's development progress which has recently voted on a token burn proposal, as well as a flourishing NFT ecosystem and (fuck sake) a pre-paid Crypto debit card which is usually the hallmark of a shitcoin.

Dogecoin

We all know and love ol' Doge. It started out as a joke Cryptocurrency with massive inflation and it hasn't really stopped inflating, which is currently at 8% per year. There are plans to have community voting on improvement protocols, and Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has offered Dogecoin developers the chance to sit down and see if they would be interested in migrating to Cardano.

Shiba

Shiba caught everyone's attention in 2021 when it surged thousands of percent and launched people's casual investments into millionaire portfolios. The "Shibaverse" metaverse Roadmap contains a whole array of different projects, including the usual NFT, Swap, gaming shit. And the Shibarium Ecosystem includes liquid staking.

Pepe

An earlier entry into the memecoin space, this came around in Spring last year and really took off, I remember it absolutely annihilated other memecoins at the time including Safemoon... everyone just took their money out to try and make it back on Pepe. There doesn't appear to be any long-term plan or usecase for Pepe. It's literally just "Pepe go up".

Bonk

This is Solana's version of a dog meme, where holders of Bonk are rewarded from a portion of transaction fees... Yeah, the old reflections chestnut. Already people are talking about "lifetime passive income" - as usual, that involves the people with the most Bonk also receiving the most reflected Bonk, so those at the top are rewarded at a vastly higher rate than the rubes with a few hundred bucks worth. Bonk is looking to implement community voting for future governance.

Dogwifhat

Another Solana dog meme, but I genuinely can't find any information on this whatsoever. What does it do? What is it looking to achieve? Couldn't tell you.

CorgiAI

This meme is on the Cronos chain, and aims to leverage AI prompts & image generation and let users earn yields on their platform, such as redeeming credits for generating AI images.

Nothing there really excites me. I think the general consensus is for developers of Memecoins to get a shitload of cash, and then throw so much shit at the wall in the hopes something will stick, probably just to keep the hype rolling.
