I'll try to keep this brief. I'm well aware that everything I am about to lay out here is my own fault, and I have no one to blame but myself.
Seriously, if you're going to do BTC (or crypto in general) be careful so you don't end up like me. DYOR, not your keys, don't trust verify, all that.
I had finally gotten past the Celsius shenanigans, for the most part. Lost the vast majority of my net worth, but in the two years since I've worked very hard (got a new, better paying, though hellish job while staying part time at the old one) and built up a stack I was proud of once again.
Got a Ledger after Celsius because I wasn't going to ever trust anyone with my coins again, no sir.
Ledger Recover and the resulting hullabaloo did sketch me out a little bit, so I picked up a Jade and tried to run it air gapped with QR codes.
Set up Jade with Nunchuk, did a test deposit and withdrawal, all good right?
I should have done a series of Nunchuk resets, seed phrase recoveries, and a number of small deposits and withdrawals using this setup before I went while hog.
But nope, that's not what I did! β οΈ????I ????
I'm not sure exactly where I messed up (don't get too in over your head before you are absolutely ready and prepared for self-custody, can't stress this enough - double check literally everything multiple times) but I figured that if I signed a TX and got a successful withdrawal, it was good to go.
I sent pretty much my whole stack to the Jade in one transaction without verifying the address on the wallet.
When I tried to test withdrawal by exporting the withdrawal transaction from Nunchuk, the Jade tells me no relevant inputs can be signed.
Recover seed phrase in blockstream Green - 0 BTC balance.
They key used to sign the test withdrawal (saved in Nunchuk) and the key imported from the Jade via Xpub QR are different. I'm not sure how this happened as, to the best of my knowledge, I only set up one seed phrase and a matching QR.
I have no way of signing the TX to withdraw at this point. Bye bye stack! I consider it a donation to the community, and an extremely valuable and expensive lesson on self sovereignty and responsibility.
I'm equal parts sad, depressed, anxious, angry, and utterly disgusted with myself for being so careless.
I knew better, but for some reason did it anyway. I remember thinking "maybe do some $5 test transactions... Nah, I signed last week, it'll be fine".
Just a few minutes of extra homework could have saved my stack.
BTC is one of, if not the greatest inventions of all time (IMO) but it does come with substantial responsibilities.
I deserved this.
