Best Staking Option for Small Balance Wallets? (Less than 32 ETH)

Hello,

I have approximately 1 ETH. I'd like to stake it and let it slowly build interest, as I don't have any reason to sell it anytime soon.

Two questions, because I've been reading this evening and am both more informed and more specifically confused than I was:
1) Just to confirm, there's no way I can stake my own ETH myself unless I own 32 ETH (about $48k worth, right now)?
2) If so, what's the safest way to do it?

I'm assuming I'll need to stake on an exchange. Recommendations? Thoughts on Coinbase? Of all the exchanges I've used, I trust it and Shapeshift the most, and I'm not clear on whether Shapeshift is doing ETH staking.
