I don’t trust hw wallets no more, with their need to firmware-update at first use. What do I do?

I’ve just got a Jade and I really don’t like that I needed internet connection to do a firmware update.

I have a cold card — I don’t recall if it needed an update at first use.

Does Trezor need firmware updates? Maybe I run with that?

Either way, I would like to have more than one wallet, and they should be from different companies.

Someone said I don’t need hw wallets, it can all run on a Linux pc. How does that work?
