It is almost too good to be true. Pseudonymous creator makes a world changing technology and doesn't take any of the rewards or recognition. Truly living the ethos of his invention. It's amazing story that is easy to fall in love with. It resonates deeply for humans who love archetypal heros. Sacrificing for the cause, Satoshi was pure in his motives and created Bitcoin in an altruistic manner. A selfless hero in this genesis story.
Satoshi is/was obviously a polymath with the ability to combine a wide ranging knowledge base across many fields to create Bitcoin. Given his or the groups demonstrate genius, wouldn't it be possible he/she/they understood that for a new invention to take over as global currency it needed a narrative that would breed passion and an almost religious level fervor.
Because to take on the pushback from all the incumbents for this new Monetary asset would not be for the faint of heart. Much of Governments and all of central banks power resides in fiat currency. Replacing fiat currency with a decentralized currency threatens a major pillar of power —the control of money — for these institutions. To have the resolve to back Bitcoin to the degree needed for victory, a story so memorable, so pure had to be woven around the code. This human part of Bitcoin is just as powerful as the network itself. I think Satoshi knew a “myth” needed to be built around bitcoin for its full potential and adoption to be realized.
Theory - Satoshi is alive, but to announce himself/herself/themselves would destroy their creation. Taking away the mystique around Bitcoin would be detrimental to its adoption, so they stay hidden.
